SWOT your career

When was the last time you put your career or even your role through its paces and really checked in that it was delivering what you needed it to?

Businesses use SWOT analysis all the time. Looking at the:

  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunities
  • Threats

This framework helps them keep ahead of what is happening and recognise what they can and can’t control and then to put into action the things needed to get what they want.

Why don’t we do this for ourselves? Sometimes putting things through a simple framework can highlight the best places for us to take action.

How would your career (or maybe even youself) come out if you put it through the SWOT test?

Take the SWOT test for your career

Try asking yourself the following questions. This is about identifying where there are opportunities for development and growth, where you may be able to shine and planning ahead for areas you may need more support in.

Strengths – what strengths do you and your career have? Are you using them wisely?

Weaknesses – where are the weaknesses or gaps? Are the important enough to do something about?

Opportunities – where is the opportunity for growth, development, change? How excited do you get when you think of these?

Threats – what is happening in your industry, life, workplace, self that could derail what you want and how do you mitigate that?

Asking ourselves questions is a great place to start. Following up with some action – no matter how small is what moves us forward. This is about being proactive in planning for your career rather than reactive and letting it happen to you.

What would your SWOT show up that you could take control of in your career?
